A measles outbreak at a Camden primary school has infected eight children, prompting a health protection update from Kirsten Watters, Director of Public Health, at a recent Health and Wellbeing Board meeting.
The outbreak, primarily affecting unvaccinated children under 10, follows a larger measles outbreak in London during the summer of 2024. Six of the reported cases have been laboratory confirmed. The school reported that six children in reception classes and two children in year 2 have been diagnosed with measles.
According to the Health Protection Update presented at the meeting, one sibling of a case who attends a nursery in Camden was also diagnosed with measles. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has provided advice for all cases and their contacts.
In response, Camden Council is working on MMR vaccine promotion in the affected school, including:
- Distribution of MMR leaflets and posters containing details of MMR catch-up clinics in multiple languages.
- Checking of child vaccine history.
- Considering a MMR vaccine session based at the school.
- MMR promotion at a school fayre in July.
All GPs in Camden have been informed of the outbreak and catch-up clinics. Wider communications have been circulated to schools, early years settings, and staff working with asylum seeker and refugee communities in Camden.
