Southwark Council has reversed its decision to cease funding for the Dementia Adviser service, a move that had been met with concern from residents and councillors.
The decision to save the service was confirmed during a Council Assembly meeting on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. The council's Executive Member for Education and Care, Councillor Rebecca Corn, stated that it was vital people with dementia and their families get the support they need,
and that the decision to let the service expire had been reversed.
This reversal comes after a period of public questioning and debate. In a question posed to Councillor Corn on July 16, 2026, Southwark News reported that the Executive had satisfied ourselves
that other services were available for residents and their families living with dementia. However, by July 20, 2026, Councillor Corn's official statement indicated a change of heart.
The Dementia Adviser service provides crucial support to individuals and families affected by dementia, offering guidance, information, and practical assistance. The decision to reinstate its funding is expected to be welcomed by many in the borough who rely on its services.
