Islington Council Shortlists Candidates for Director of Law and Governance

Islington Council has shortlisted candidates for the crucial role of Director of Law and Governance, a position vital for supporting the council's strategic objectives.

The Appointments and General Purposes Committee met on Friday, September 25, 2026, to agree on a shortlist of individuals to be interviewed for the senior officer post. This role is integral to the delivery of the council's missions, with the postholder, as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, having a key role in supporting, enabling, and monitoring the implementation of the Corporate Plan. 1

The salary for the Director of Law and Governance position ranges from £124,431 to £140,445 per annum, with an additional £12,534 for the Monitoring Officer duties. These costs are covered within existing budgets.

The recruitment process has followed the Council's Constitution, specifically the Officer Employment Rules. Candidates are scheduled to be interviewed in October. Any employment offer will be subject to the Executive Notification Procedure. For appointments of this nature, the Head of Democratic Services will arrange for the recommendation of the Committee to be submitted to the next, or an additional, meeting of the Council for approval. 2

The meeting, chaired by Councillor Claire Zammit, also included Councillor Una O'Halloran (Leader of the Council) and Councillor Paul Convery (Executive Member for Finance). The press and public were excluded from the latter part of the meeting to discuss the sensitive matter of candidate shortlisting.
