Newham Council has committed £750,000 to bolster faith burial provisions across the borough, aiming to secure sustainable, long-term solutions for residents.

The investment, approved during a recent Council meeting, addresses the growing pressure on burial capacity. A shortage of burial space means some Newham families, particularly Muslim families, have to arrange burials outside of the borough, creating additional difficulty and distress at an already difficult time.

Councillor Zulfiqar Ali, Cabinet Member for Finance, Resources and Transformation, proposed the motion, which was seconded by Councillor Mahmood Mirza. The motion welcomed the significant investment and reaffirmed the Council's dedication to finding lasting solutions.

It also requested that the Mayor and Cabinet provide a report back to Full Council within twelve months. This report will detail the utilisation of the £750,000, outline progress in increasing burial capacity, and present proposals for a long-term strategy. The full details of the council meeting can be found in the Agenda frontsheet.

The Council affirmed its commitment to continued collaboration with faith communities, neighbouring authorities, and other partners to ensure appropriate and sustainable burial provisions for all Newham residents.
