Sutton Council Approves Eight New Homes at Worcester Park Burial Ground Despite Resident Objections

Sutton Council's Planning Committee has approved plans for the erection of a three-storey building containing eight self-contained residential units at Memorial Gardens Burial Ground in Worcester Park.

The decision, made on Wednesday 7 October 2026, followed a meeting where councillors debated the application, which had received over 10 objections from local residents. Concerns raised included inadequate parking, highway pressure, the scale and intensity of the development being out of keeping with the area, neighbour amenity issues, and drainage pressure.

Despite these objections, the committee granted permission for the development. The applicant's agent presented a revised scheme, described as more compact and efficient in its land use, with a design intended to enhance landscaping and integrate with the surroundings. Crucially, all buried remains have been removed from the site, meaning existing burial plots and memorial structures will not be affected by the construction.

Council officers recommended approval, noting the provision of adequate amenity space and parking, and compliance with design and environmental policies. The committee's decision means that the former burial ground will now be redeveloped for housing. Specific conditions attached to the approval include the implementation of enhanced landscaping and boundary treatments to mitigate resident concerns.
