Lightmongers Company Modernizes Ordinances with Gender-Neutral Language and New Provisions
The General Purposes Committee of Aldermen of the City of London approved revised ordinances for the Worshipful Company of Lightmongers on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. The updates aim to modernise the company's governing documents and align them with contemporary operations, more accurately reflecting current practices.
Key changes include the introduction of provisions for Past Masters Emeriti. A Past Master becomes a Past Master Emeritus when they have resigned from the Court and elect to continue to receive Court papers and attend Court Meetings when they wish to do so. This occurs after they have ceased to have the right to vote, which is four years after relinquishing the Office of Deputy Master. Past Masters Emeriti will continue to receive Court papers and be welcome to attend Court Meetings, though they do not count towards the Court's membership limit and do not have voting rights. The revised ordinances also incorporate definitions previously found only in the company's bylaws, reflect recent adjustments to its charitable trust, and ensure the use of gender-neutral language throughout.
These revised ordinances were previously considered and recommended for approval by the Magistracy and Livery Sub Committee. The approval by the General Purposes Committee signifies a significant step in modernising the company's governance.
