Lewisham Cycle Hire Schemes to Introduce More Inclusive Bike Options and Expand Availability

Lewisham's cycle hire schemes are set to become more accessible to a wider range of users, with Transport for London (TfL) exploring options to introduce more inclusive bike variants and potentially expand their availability.

During a recent Public Transport Liaison Forum meeting, councillors heard that TfL is actively investigating ways to enhance the accessibility of cycle hire schemes. This includes discussions with operators about potential future offerings that could cater to individuals with varying mobility needs.

Councillor Corinne Ashwell, representing Wheels for Wellbeing, raised the crucial question of how cycle hire schemes can be made more accessible. In response, TfL confirmed that Disabled Person's Freedom Pass holders already benefit from a discount on Santander Cycles subscriptions. The authority is now looking into providing more accessible bike options.

Furthermore, operator Lime is collaborating with the council to establish new designated parking bays, funded by their Lime Infrastructure Fund. This initiative involves analysing high-demand locations to strategically place these bays. Lime is also in discussion with Wheels for Wellbeing to determine what accessible bike options could look like in the future, which may involve expanding the availability of such options across the borough.

The meeting also covered the minutes of the previous meeting, which can be viewed here. The agenda and public reports pack for the 20th October 2026 meeting of the Public Transport Liaison Forum are also available online: Agenda and Public Reports Pack.
