Bexley Council is continuing its efforts to secure the extension of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to Belvedere, with lobbying efforts involving multiple stakeholders.
Councillor Jeremy Fosten raised the issue at a Public Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, seeking clarification on the council's plan to pressure stakeholders for the DLR's delivery.
Councillor Cameron Smith, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth & Infrastructure, assured members that lobbying efforts are ongoing and multifaceted. He stated that discussions are being held with Greenwich Council, London Councils, and Local London, a sub-regional grouping of nine boroughs.
Councillor Smith explained that these alliances are crucial for advocating for key infrastructure projects, recognising that growth in one part of the sub-region benefits all. He highlighted that the council is working with partners to make a strong case for infrastructure investment, which would unlock more housing, jobs, and economic growth.
Councillor Smith confirmed that the DLR extension to Belvedere remains a top priority and that he would be discussing it with the Leader of Greenwich Council on Friday. He also noted that the financing package for the DLR extension into Thamesmead is still being finalised.
The council's Corporate Plan 2026-2030, discussed at the same meeting, also references campaigning for investment in transport infrastructure to improve connectivity and reduce congestion, with specific mention of advocating for the DLR extension to Belvedere.
