Tower Hamlets Council considers Anti-Racism Training for Councillors

Tower Hamlets Council is considering the introduction of anti-racism training for its councillors. The Standards Advisory Committee discussed the matter during its meeting on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, prompted by a general discussion that referenced previous points about anti-racism training and a review by Lord Mann into anti-Semitism in the NHS.

The discussion was linked to reports to the Health Select Committee about specialist anti-Semitism and anti-Islamophobia training. A question was raised as to whether this had been examined within the context of local government and if there was any learning to be drawn from these reports.

While no specific anti-racism course is currently available for councillors, the committee heard that consideration is being given to incorporating such training into the Member Development Programme. Officers confirmed they would investigate whether other local authorities have implemented similar anti-racism training for employees, drawing inspiration from approaches taken by the NHS. This exploration aims to identify best practices that could be adapted for councillors in Tower Hamlets. Officers will explore this and report back.
