Hillingdon Council is seeking up to £2.8 million from Transport for London (TfL) to fund a range of transport infrastructure improvements across the borough.
The funding bid, part of the council's proposed 2027/28 Local Implementation Plan (LIP) Delivery Programme, aims to enhance safer streets, improve accessibility, promote active travel, implement bus priority measures, and carry out targeted road safety improvements.
Councillor Wayne Bridges, Cabinet Member for Residents Services, highlighted that the bid includes a proposal for up to £1 million through TfL's Borough Safer Streets programme. This specific funding is earmarked for improvements to St Andrew's Roundabout in Uxbridge, a key element of the Uxbridge Vision, intended to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists. Beyond general safety enhancements, the improvements at St Andrew's Roundabout will help deliver a key element of the Uxbridge vision.
The programme focuses on safer streets, improved accessibility, active travel, bus priority measures, and targeted road safety improvements. Schemes are required to align with TfL priorities including road safety, walking, cycling, bus reliability, traffic reduction and sustainable travel. Supporting evidence has been drawn from TfL datasets, local transport information and stakeholder feedback to ensure investment is targeted at areas of greatest need. The Borough Safer Streets fund could provide up to £1 million for larger-scale interventions at locations with significant collision records and road safety concerns.
The programme also encompasses investment in school safety schemes, cycle routes, cycle parking, and upgrades to the Grand Union Canal towpath. Specifically mentioned for school safety schemes are Rosedale College, Harmondsworth Primary School, Minet Infant & Junior Schools, Belmore Primary School, and Guru Nanak Secondary School. The remaining £1.8 million of the funding bid will be allocated across these initiatives, including improvements around local shopping parades and town centres.
If successful, the funding will help to reduce pressure on council resources while delivering tangible benefits for residents across Hillingdon. The proposals align with TfL's guidance, emphasising evidence-led investment and the delivery of Healthy Streets objectives. The council's priority is to secure investment that responds to local needs and delivers lasting benefits for residents. Funding remains subject to TfL's approval, and individual schemes will require further development and consultation where necessary.
