Kensington and Chelsea Council has deferred decisions on motions regarding sanctuary status and enhancing green spaces at its recent Full Council meeting.
The motions, which were listed on the Agenda Frontsheet 16th-Jul-2025 18.30 Full Council, were:
- A motion to enhance greening and bee superhighways in the borough.
- A motion for RBKC to be accepted as a Borough of Sanctuary.
The council did not provide a reason for the deferral, and it is unclear when these motions will be brought forward again for consideration.
The motion for RBKC to become a Borough of Sanctuary, proposed by Councillor Emma Dent Coad and seconded by Councillor Dr Mona Ahmed, signals a commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for those seeking refuge. This entails creating a welcoming environment, fostering collaboration between the council, community groups, and charities, ensuring fair access to services, providing language support, and promoting cultural understanding. Formal recognition would be sought from City of Sanctuary UK.
The motion to enhance greening and bee superhighways, moved by Councillor Lloyd North and seconded by Councillor Walaa Idris, proposes a renewed engagement programme to inspire residents to participate in greening initiatives. The motion also calls for discussions between the Lead Member for Property, Parks & Leisure Services, the Lead Member for the Environment & Planning, and planning officers on how s106 agreements and 'works in kind' can encourage developers to incorporate green walls and promote greening in future projects.
