Enfield Council has successfully prevented a fraudulent application for the Right to Buy scheme, safeguarding public assets. The incident was noted in the Annual Internal Audit and Counter Fraud Report 2024/25, which was presented to the General Purposes Committee on Wednesday, 23 July 2025.

The report detailed that the applicant had falsified their earnings to secure a mortgage offer. The fraudulent pay slips were identified through checks with HMRC, thanks to the vigilance of the Counter Fraud team. The deception was uncovered, and the application was stopped.

The Annual Internal Audit and Counter Fraud Report 2024/25 was reviewed by the General Purposes Committee, composed of Councillors Ian Barnes (Chair), Mahmut Aksanoglu (Vice-Chair), Nicki Adeleke, Nawshad Ali, Hivran Dalkaya, Chris Dey, Alessandro Georgiou (Leader of the Opposition and Conservative Party), Elisa Morreale, Julian Sampson and Peter Nwosu.

The successful thwarting of this fraudulent application demonstrates the effectiveness of the council's counter-fraud measures in protecting public resources.
