Tower Hamlets Council's Strategic Development Committee has approved the redevelopment of the historic Truman's Brewery East site, paving the way for a significant transformation of the Brick Lane area. The plan includes the creation of new residential units, with 36% designated as affordable housing, measured by habitable room.

The approved plan involves the demolition of existing structures, with the exception of the Grade II listed Boiler House and Cooperage buildings, and the construction of five new buildings. The development aims to create approximately 35,000 square metres of space for a mix of uses, including residential units, office space, retail outlets, community space, a supermarket, a microbrewery, market space, event space, and public toilets.

The Boiler House, a Grade II listed building, is set to be retained and refurbished, featuring a new extension to the east and a viewing platform. The Cooperage building will also be retained and refurbished, housing event space and a microbrewery on the ground floor, while retaining existing art studio space on the first floor.

The proposed development aims to create new publicly accessible routes through the site from Brick Lane, Buxton Street and Spital Street, along with landscaping, a vehicle and servicing loading bay, and two new publicly accessible squares. The Strategic Development Committee agenda stated that Councillor Amin Rahman was scheduled to chair the meeting.

The Strategic Development Committee also considered other planning applications at the meeting, including a data centre proposal on Grey Eagle Street and a commercial building on Ely's Yard. These will be covered in separate reports.
