Visits to Lewisham's libraries have increased by 8% in the last year, with issues also increasing by 6%, despite the closure of the main Lewisham Library branch for refurbishment. These figures were presented in a report at the Safer Stronger Communities Select Committee meeting on Wednesday 03 September 2025.
The success comes as the community library model continues to grow in popularity. Specific initiatives that contributed to the increase in library visits and issues include the Vox Box collection, which increases access to reading and literacy with young people, the Imagined Wells project around sci-fi and fantasy, and the Echoes Music project, which brought gigs into library spaces and started a vinyl swap event.
The community library model involves delivering library services through community partners. Simon Higgs from Calico, which runs four of Lewisham's community libraries, stated that all of the libraries are issuing more books now than they were when Calico took over. He also said that visitor numbers are returning to pre-pandemic levels, and that the libraries are serving people from all areas of the community.
Councillor Sakina Sheikh, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Sports, praised the work of library staff and volunteers, highlighting Lewisham Library being awarded Library of the Year in the London region.
Sidra Hill-Reid, Lewisham Council officer, presented the report, noting the success of the community library model and additional funding secured for Torridon Road Library and Grove Park Library. Torridon Road Library was awarded just under £7,000, and Grove Park Library was awarded £18,000. This funding will result in things like increased opening hours for some of those libraries.
The contractors are expected to start work on the Lewisham Library refurbishment on September 8th, and the works are hoped to be finished by summer of the following year. The refurbishment plans include engagement and co-design with 36 target groups within the community. A new heritage center will be located on the third floor, and display cases will be installed on the ground floor.
