Bromley has missed out on being selected as a pilot area for a new NHS initiative aimed at improving early detection of pancreatic cancer, despite an application from the South East London Cancer Alliance.
The initiative aims to improve early diagnosis of one of the most lethal cancers. More information about the NHS drive can be found here.
The outcome was revealed at a Bromley Council Health Scrutiny Sub-Committee meeting on 3 July 2025, in response to a question from Councillor Alison Stammers, Chair of the Chislehurst Partnership Patients' Participation Group.
Cllr Stammers asked whether any of Bromley's GP practices would be participating in the pilot.
The response confirmed that while the South East London Cancer Alliance had applied on behalf of Bromley and surrounding areas, the bid was unsuccessful.
However, there is hope for the future. The council anticipates that if the pilot proves successful in the selected areas, the early identification process will be rolled out to all GP practices nationwide, including those in Bromley, after the findings are reported in Autumn 2025.
