Lewisham Council has approved the use of Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy (SCIL) funds to support the delivery of the long-awaited Surrey Canal Station. The decision was made at a Mayor and Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, 10 September 2025, marking a significant step forward for the project.
The new station, planned for the Windrush Line between Surrey Quays and Queens Road Peckham, is set to transform transport connectivity in the area. It will directly serve the New Bermondsey development, which promises 3,500 new homes, and indirectly support over 4,000 additional homes in both Lewisham and Southwark. The concept and detailed design works are expected to commence in early 2026 and complete in early 2028. Subject to TfL securing funding, the main works would commence following this and last for approximately two years.
Councillor James-J Walsh, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Regeneration and Planning, emphasized the station's importance, noting that it will not only improve transport links but also boost the local economy and promote sustainable development. The station is designed to be step-free, ensuring accessibility for all passengers.
According to the meeting reports, Transport for London (TfL) has already made passive provisions for the station during the Overground extension in the early 2010s. However, due to budget constraints, the project was divided into phases. Now, TfL has restarted early contractor involvement (ECI) and is seeking contributions from public and private sectors to bridge the funding gap for concept and detailed design works.
The Mayor and Cabinet approved delegating authority to the Executive Director of Place to approve allocations of SCIL funds and enter into agreements necessary for the project's progression, as detailed in the Public reports pack.
The council's contribution will come from the Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy (SCIL).
