Westminster City Council is addressing the critical issue of school place planning, with a focus on primary school surplus capacity, as discussed at a recent Council meeting.

The Young People, Learning and Employment Committee is at the forefront of this effort, scrutinising the current landscape and forecasting primary capacity to ensure that children and young people in Westminster have the best start in life and access to excellent schools. The committee is also working with schools that currently do not have a Debt Recovery Plan on the options presented to them.

Falling school rolls in the City have been of significant interest to the Committee. The Committee is focused on children and young people being able to have the best start in life, be well cared for and to attend excellent schools that promote achievement.

Several recommendations have been made regarding what the Council can do as part of its budget planning to campaign and promote school places in Westminster to increase admissions from in and outside the City. Additionally, Members requested that senior officers consider how other local authorities have used their general funds to support schools not to fall into deficit, increase their pupil rolls, and in turn help prevent the use of their reserve funds. The Committee is constituted with education co-opted representatives in its membership which enabled meaningful discussions on these topics.
