Hackney Council has addressed a range of public concerns, from housing and climate change to community engagement, during its latest council meeting.

Climate Change Initiatives
The council reviewed the Year 2 annual report on the Council Climate Implementation Plan 2023-2026. The plan, which covers the period up to 31 March 2026, outlines key actions for the council to meet the goals of its Climate Action Plan (CAP). Councillor Sarah Young, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport, presented the report, highlighting Hackney's ranking as fifth among London councils and single-tier authorities in the UK for progress toward net zero. Key initiatives discussed included community energy projects, the residential solar project, and sustainable transport efforts.
Councillor Alastair Binnie-Lubbock commended the strategy but expressed concern about the slow pace of the solar panel pilot, given the climate emergency declared six years ago. He urged faster implementation to meet the Council's climate goals.
Residential Solar Project
The council has been keen to include all estates in the residential solar project. Panels have been installed on 27 blocks, selected from almost 3000 residential buildings based on their viability for the pilot scheme. Residents are being contacted to invite them to sign up for the pilot scheme. Wilton Estate was not identified for this first phase.
Cllr Young stated that the pilot scheme would be evaluated to determine the feasibility of future phases and widespread rollout.
