Newham is bracing for significant NHS cuts, with integrated care boards (ICBs) facing a target of reducing running costs by 50% by the end of the year. Further guidance from the government on how these reductions should be implemented is still awaited.
The announcement was made at a recent meeting of Newham's Health and Adult Social Care Scrutiny Commission, where Jo Fraser-Wise, Director of Delivery for Newham NHS NEL, confirmed the target. She also noted that the model for ICB proposals, originally due in April, had not yet been issued.
The commission, chaired by Councillor Susan Masters, discussed the potential impact of these cuts on local services. Councillor Neil Wilson, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, acknowledged that the reductions were expected to impact both borough-level services and supporting system functions. He assured the committee that the financial implications would be closely monitored.
The cuts follow previous cost-saving measures, with the ICB already tasked with reducing operating costs by approximately 30%. The additional 50% reduction is expected to have a significant impact on resources, although the exact details remain unclear pending further guidance from the government.
The commission resolved to continue monitoring the potential impact of national reductions to ICB resources on health and care services in Newham and receive further updates as local implications become clearer. The impact of the cuts will be considered as part of future work programme planning.
