Lewisham councillors are set to vote on a proposed 3.2% increase to their basic allowances at a council meeting on Wednesday, 24 September 2025.
The report, scheduled for discussion at the meeting, recommends raising the basic allowance from £12,792 to £13,201 per year, effective from 1 April 2025. The increase also applies to all existing Special Responsibility Allowances (SRAs).
The proposed 3.2% increase to the basic allowance and Special Responsibility Allowances (SRAs) is an increase of the same amount as Council employees,
according to the Members' Allowances report.
According to the Members' Allowances report, the cost of the allowance increase will be £20,000, to be paid from the Governance team's budget. The report also instructs the Monitoring Officer to review the council's current allowances against the most recent report of the Independent Remuneration Panel and to bring a report to a future meeting of the council. This suggests that the Independent Remuneration Panel provides reports that the council uses to determine appropriate allowance levels.
