Lambeth Council's Appointments Sub-Committee is set to decide whether to exclude the press and public from interviews for the position of Corporate Director. The decision is scheduled to be made at a meeting on Thursday, 25 September 2025, at Lambeth Town Hall.

The committee will consider a resolution under Section 100A-H of the Local Government Act 1972 to exclude the press and public. According to the agenda, this is because the discussion is likely to involve exempt information as defined by Section 100I and Schedule 12A of the Act, specifically information relating to individuals, such as employees, former employees, or applicants. The Public Reports Pack states that candidate reports are exempt from disclosure under this paragraph.

The meeting will also address the interview process for recruiting four Corporate Director posts: Corporate Director of Growth & Environment, Corporate Director of Housing, Corporate Director Integrated Care Board & Adults, and Corporate Director of Resources. According to the Public Reports Pack, the council recently completed a top-tier senior management restructure, changing the name of Strategic Directors to Corporate Directors.

The restructure aims to reduce senior management posts by 20%, from seven to five, saving around £1 million. The Public Reports Pack states that the top-tier restructure forms part of the councils strategic objective of cutting the number of senior management posts by 20%, reducing the number of directorates and therefore corporate directors from 7 down to 5 . The recruitment process is ringfenced to current Corporate Directors. The job description and person specification for all four roles were drawn up and evaluated as part of the Senior Management Restructure to reflect responsibilities of the role. The Public Reports Pack states that the roles were not advertised internally as this is a ringfenced process for current Corporate Directors to apply only.

The Public Reports Pack outlines the timetable for the remainder of the recruitment process:

15, 18, 19 and 22 September 2025: Appointments Committee meet to undertake Interviews of candidates. 26 September 2025: If appointment made the Well Founded Objection process begins 30 September 2025: End of Well Founded Objection process

The remuneration for each Corporate Director role ranges between £149,077.23 and £185,667 per year, including on-costs, and is fully budgeted.

The Public Reports Pack also includes the following recommendation:

To exclude the press and public from the remainder of the meeting on the grounds that, for the item of business summarised below, it was likely that the exempt information, as defined by section 100I and schedule 12A of the Local Government Act 1972 and as specified by reference to the appropriate paragraph thereof, would be disclosed to them.

This refers to Paragraph 1 of Schedule 12A to the Local Government Act 1972, which covers:

Information relating to any individual

Attendees of the meeting include Councillor Matthew Bryant (Deputy Group Leader), Councillor Marcia Cameron (Cabinet Member for Economic Inclusion), Councillor Judith Cavanagh (Deputy Cabinet Member for Finance), Councillor Claire Holland (Leader of the Council), and Councillor Nanda Manley-Browne (Cabinet Member for Healthier Communities (job-share)).
