Redbridge Council is set to review a shortfall in public health funding, following discussions at the Health Scrutiny Sub-committee meeting on Thursday, 25 September 2025. The review follows a recent spending review announcement by central government, which members said had resulted in no additional public health funding being allocated to the borough for the current year.

While the exact amount of the shortfall has not been specified, the Cabinet Member for Adult Care and Health commented that the Public Health grant spending allocation was disappointing for local government and had not alleviated the local funding challenges.

This issue was initially discussed at a previous meeting held on 17 June 2025, where the committee considered the impact of the government's announcement, according to the minutes from that meeting in the Public Reports Pack.

At the June meeting, the Director of Public Health and Commissioning welcomed the committee's consideration of future topics on the future work programme and suggested the Annual Public Health Report, Smoking Cessation, and the national Million Hearts and Minds programme be considered alongside the regular Health Protection updates. The national Million Hearts and Minds programme is designed to improve cardiovascular health.

Councillor D. Morgan-Thomas, Chair of the Health Scrutiny Sub-committee, along with other members, will further examine the implications of the funding situation and explore potential solutions. The review is part of a broader discussion on health protection and public health priorities for the upcoming year.

The Health Scrutiny Sub-committee will also discuss the Annual Public Health Report, Smoking Cessation, and the national Million Hearts and Minds programme at future meetings. The Agenda Frontsheet provides a detailed list of topics to be covered.
