Tower Hamlets Council's Grants Determination (Cabinet) Sub-Committee (GDSC) has reported that funding for the Limehouse Welfare Association was withdrawn from the Mayor's Community Grant Programme (MCGP) following a decision at the 6 November GDSC meeting. The decision was noted at a meeting on Wednesday, 1 October 2025.
The MCGP supports voluntary and community sector organisations across five key themes:
- Tackling the cost-of-living crisis
- Accelerate Education
- Culture, Business, Jobs and Skills
- Invest in public services
- Empower communities and fight crime
According to a performance report included in the Public reports pack for January to March 2025, 101 of the 110 originally funded projects were rated GREEN, 7 were AMBER, and 1 was RED. In addition to the Limehouse Welfare Association project being withdrawn, the report noted that Quaker Social Action would no longer be able to deliver their MCGP project due to an organisational restructure. City Gateway had also announced they were going into administration, resulting in the closure of their MCGP project.
The agenda for the meeting also included discussions on the Holiday Activities and Food programme (HAF) and the Wraparound Childcare Programme. The attendees of the meeting included Mayor Lutfur Rahman (Executive Mayor), Councillor Maium Talukdar (Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Education, Youth and Lifelong Learning (Statutory Deputy Mayor)), and Councillor Saied Ahmed (Cabinet Member for Resources and the Cost of Living).
