Greenwich Council has concluded its search for a new Director of Communications and Community Engagement, following interviews held by the Appointments Panel on Monday, 6 October 2025. The new director will be expected to deliver innovative and inclusive communications and modernise community engagement within the council.

The Appointments Panel, comprised of Councillor Anthony Okereke (Leader of the Council), Councillor Denise Hyland (Cabinet Member Finance, Resources and Social Value), Councillor Averil Lekau (Deputy Leader), Councillor Mariam Lolavar (Cabinet Member Health, Adult Social Care and Borough of Sanctuary), and Councillor Raja Zeeshan, convened to interview candidates for the key role.

The Director of Communications and Community Engagement will be responsible for shaping and delivering the council's communication and community engagement strategies. Key responsibilities and priorities for the first year include:

  • Developing and delivering the council's communication and community engagement strategies.
  • Ensuring effective communication both within and external to the council.
  • Leading the community engagement function, delivering modern and effective forms of community engagement.
  • Ensuring the council's communications are innovative and inclusive.
  • Advising the Chief Executive, the Leader, the Cabinet, and the Council on all aspects of communications and community engagement.
  • Managing the council's reputation and profile with stakeholders.
  • Working with directorates to deliver communication and marketing programmes.
  • Delivering effective communications during emergencies.
  • Maintaining relationships with the media.
  • Understanding issues affecting local government.
  • Contributing to the modernisation of the council's services.
  • Formulating corporate policies and initiatives.
  • Acting as an ambassador for the borough.
  • Mentoring and developing senior staff.

The agenda for the meeting included a resolution to exclude the press and public from the remainder of the session, to allow for confidential discussions during the interview process.
