Southwark Council is set to review its whistleblowing policy as part of a broader effort to improve transparency and accountability within the organisation.
The decision came to light during a recent Overview & Scrutiny Committee meeting on Wednesday 8 October 2025, where the Cabinet's response to recommendations arising from scrutiny of Consort Estate major works charges to leaseholders was discussed.
Recommendation six from the committee was to strengthen the whistleblowing system within the Council. The Cabinet partially accepted this recommendation, noting that the whistleblowing policy is reviewed on a four-yearly cycle and a new draft policy is going through the governance process. The council is also arranging training for staff and investigating officers to take place once the policy is approved.
The council's current policy complies with the law, policy, best practice and is in line with most councils, and is an essential part of the governance framework. The timing of the policy approval and subsequent staff training has not yet been specified.
