Barnet Council has voted to maintain its policy of not removing posters and ribbons related to hostages taken during the Yom Kippur terrorist attack until all those taken have been released. The decision came after a motion was put forward at a Council meeting on Tuesday 21 October 2025.
The original motion, proposed by Councillor Mastin Lee, stated that Barnet Council must not take down hostage posters and ribbons until all hostages have been released.
Councillor Mastin Lee initially moved the motion, arguing that the posters and ribbons provided reassurance to residents. Councillor Conway then moved an amendment, which was carried, stating that further community engagement must take place before anything is removed by Transport for London (TfL) or the council.
The meeting information indicates that both Barnet Council and Transport for London (TfL) were involved in the decision to remove the hostage posters and ribbons. Councillor Conway's amendment suggests a need for community engagement before any removal of posters and ribbons, implying concerns about the impact on the community.
The amended motion reflects the council's commitment to supporting its communities. The original motion was superseded by the amendment.
