Queenstown Road in Wandsworth is set for a makeover, with new cycle lanes and public art planned as part of ongoing improvement schemes. The Wandsworth Transport Committee met on 19 June 2025 to discuss the latest developments, focusing on extending improvements south of Battersea Park Road.
The Queenstown Road Improvement Scheme aims to enhance conditions for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users. The project divides the road into five segments, with preferred design options approved in February 2020. A temporary scheme, introduced in 2020 as part of the COVID-19 recovery, included extending the northbound bus lane and improving cycle lanes. This has now been made permanent.
Proposals for the southern section of Queenstown Road include:
- Removing the northbound bus lane between Southolm Street and Silverthorne Road, replacing it with a stepped track cycle lane.
- Replacing the existing southbound cycle lane with a stepped track.
- Introducing feature lighting and art features under the railway bridges, including Ravenet Street.
- Adding a controlled pedestrian crossing near the Queenstown Road Station bus stops.
- Improving the public realm with new trees and planting.
The committee also received updates on other major schemes, including Old York Road, where permanent road layouts are being installed following a successful trial of semi-pedestrianisation. Construction is expected to be completed by mid-July 2025, with a pause at Ferrier Street due to Network Rail works.
Burntwood Lane corridor works are also underway, featuring new zebra crossings, a toucan crossing, and segregated cycle lanes. Construction began in January 2025 and is progressing from east to west.
Additionally, the Totterdown Street pedestrianisation trial, which began in May 2024, has been deemed a success, with 62% of respondents supporting a permanent scheme. The trial involved creating a pedestrian space and a one-way section on Kellino Street. Pending approval, phase 1 works could commence in Autumn 2025.
