Construction is underway on Burntwood Lane as part of Wandsworth Council's ongoing efforts to improve active travel and public spaces. The Wandsworth Transport Overview and Scrutiny Committee met on 19 June 2025 to discuss the project, along with updates on other major schemes across the borough.
The Burntwood Lane corridor works, approved in November 2023, include four new zebra crossings, a toucan crossing (allowing both pedestrians and cyclists), continuous raised crossings at side roads, footway widening, and segregated cycle lanes. Construction began in January 2025 and is progressing from east to west. According to the council, the zebra crossing on Beechcroft Road was completed in March, along with continuous crossings at Sandgate and Lyminge Gardens. Footway renewals have reached Ellerton Road, and continuous crossings have been installed at Marham Gardens, Ellerton Road, and Tilehurst.

Other projects discussed at the meeting include:
- Old York Road: Following a successful trial of semi-pedestrianisation, the council is creating a permanent road layout with greenery and sustainable drainage. Construction started in September 2024 and is expected to continue until the end of 2025, with a pause at Ferrier Street for Network Rail station works.
- Queenstown Road: Improvements between Chelsea Bridge and Queen's Circus began in March 2025, including stepped cycle tracks, footway regrading, and bus stop changes. Phase 2, involving junction upgrades and carriageway resurfacing, is slated for completion by Spring 2026. The committee also reviewed proposals for Queenstown Road south of Battersea Park Road, including new cycle lanes, pedestrian crossings, and public realm enhancements.
- Totterdown Street: A public realm improvement trial, which began in May 2024, has seen the creation of a pedestrian space and a one-way section on Kellino Street. A consultation showed that 62% of respondents would like the scheme to be made permanent. Pending cabinet approval, phase 1 of the permanent scheme could start in Autumn 2025.
The agenda for the meeting also included discussion of the annual review of traffic and engineering petitions, corporate plan actions, and budget monitoring. The public reports pack provides further details on these topics.
