Totterdown Street's pedestrianisation trial is entering its second year, Wandsworth Council's Transport Overview and Scrutiny Committee heard on Thursday. The trial, which began in May 2024, has transformed a section of the street into a pedestrian-friendly zone, aiming to create a vibrant market street.
The trial involves creating a pedestrian space on Totterdown Street between St Cyprian Street and Blakenham Road, and making Kellino Street one-way between Blakenham Road and St Cyprian. After feedback from local businesses and residents, the pedestrianised area is now in effect 24/7.
The committee reviewed the progress of several major schemes across the borough, including the Old York Road public realm works, the Burntwood Lane corridor works, and improvements to Queenstown Road. The meeting also covered the annual review of traffic and engineering petitions, corporate plan actions, and budget monitoring.
According to a report presented to the committee, 62% of respondents to a consultation would like the Totterdown Street scheme to be made permanent, with 51% reporting they were happy or very happy with the trial.
Pending cabinet approval, phase 1 of the permanent scheme, focusing on the pedestrianised zone between St Cyprian and Blakenham Road, could begin in the autumn. Future phases would extend the improvements to link with the A24 and St Cyprian Street.
The council highlighted that the projects support the objectives of the Wandsworth Environment and Sustainability Strategy, promoting sustainable transport and encouraging a shift towards walking and cycling.
