Hackney Council is set to establish a Housing Advisory Panel to navigate the changing regulatory landscape and improve services for residents. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting on Monday 23 June 2025, where councillors addressed key issues facing the borough.
The panel aims to provide oversight and scrutiny of the council's housing management and repair system, which Mayor Caroline Woodley identified as a top priority. The panel will consist of three independent housing professionals who will advise the council on its improvement journey, working alongside residents and tenants.
Councillor Guy Nicholson, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Housing Management and Regeneration, emphasized that the panel is not intended to replace existing resident engagement structures, such as Tenants and Residents Associations (TRAs). Concerns were raised by Councillor Reet about why members of TRAs couldn't hold positions on the panel. Councillor Nicholson clarified that the panel would develop a working relationship with tenants and leaseholders, and the process for TRA representatives would be determined by the panel itself.
During the meeting, the Cabinet also discussed the borough's financial position, with Councillor Robert Chapman, Cabinet Member for Finance, Insourcing and Customer Service, noting a reduction in the projected overspend to £27.346 million. Other topics included capital investments, the evening and night-time economy, and community safety. The Cabinet approved a consultation on extending a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for Wick Woodlands, Hackney Marshes, and surrounding areas, aiming to manage antisocial behaviour and protect nature.
Mayor Woodley also acknowledged Mark Agnew's last meeting with the council, thanking him for his service to Hackney.
