Greenwich Council is set to boost the local economy this December with the introduction of Christmas huts across the borough and a Youth Enterprise Programme.
The council's Inclusive Economy and Culture Scrutiny Panel heard that 18 chalet huts will be available in Greenwich High Road, Eltham and Beresford Square. Applications for a pitch can be found at the Royal Greenwich Website.
Ten young entrepreneurs will also debut their business ideas at the new chalet-style Christmas stalls in Beresford Square for the whole month of December, after completing the Youth Enterprise Programme. The six-week programme, delivered in collaboration with the Royal Borough of Greenwich, training provider Academy of Success and Berkeley Homes, equips 18 to 25-year-olds with the skills and knowledge to launch their concepts.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to support local enterprise and invigorate town centres. Future plans outlined in the Review of Markets and Update on Market Improvement Planning report, presented to the Inclusive Economy and Culture Scrutiny Panel on 6 November 2025, include establishing Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) in each of the main town centres. These BIDs will play a key role in driving market activation, supporting local businesses and enhancing the trading environment.
The Review of Markets and Update on Market Improvement Planning report highlighted the importance of markets and street trading as platforms for local enterprise, cultural vibrancy, and community engagement.
