Richmond upon Thames saw parking income exceed budget expectations, according to the latest budget monitoring report.
The Transport and Air Quality Committee reviewed the Quarter 2 budget monitoring report for 2025/26, which highlighted this variance within the overall revenue budget.
Parking Income Exceeds Expectations
The report noted that parking services are projected to underspend by £286,000, primarily due to overall parking income being marginally above budget. According to the Q2 Quarterly Monitoring Report, this underspend represents just 1.7% of the overall operational parking budget. The report in the Q2 Quarterly Monitoring Report notes that One reason for the expected overachievement for parking income has been slight increases in the volume and average transaction value experienced across the Council's off-street car parks.
At the meeting, Councillor Buckley raised concerns about parking charges around Twickenham, saying We're losing money through our parking meters around Tick and Green on Match Day, big time. So just say the money's there. People are spending £25 to park their cars there. Let's have some of that business.
The committee agreed to evaluate parking prices, particularly in relation to event day activity.
Councillor Alexander Ehmann (Chair of the Transport and Air Quality Committee) noted the importance of maintaining enforcement of parking rules, despite industrial issues with the parking contractor. He said that the income levels demonstrate is actually we've done corporately a very good job of actually maintaining the enforcement of the rules relating to the road.
Councillor Ehmann mentioned that the council maintained enforcement despite a number of industrial issues occurring between our parking contractor and their employee base as well.
The specific nature of these issues is not detailed.
