Dartmouth Park residents have voiced concerns over the proposed placement of bike hangars on Dartmouth Park Avenue, arguing that the current siting is not conducive to residents' access to their homes. The proposed location is outside the front entrance of houses. The issue was raised in a deputation from Dr Iain Oswald on behalf of some residents of Dartmouth Park Avenue at the Camden Culture and Environment Scrutiny Committee meeting on Monday, 10 November 2025.

Dr Oswald argued that the proposed location of the bike hangar would interfere with residents' access to their houses. In his deputation request, available in the Supplementary Agenda, Dr Oswald stated:

We feel that the siting of the bike hangar in one such site, on Dartmouth Park Avenue, is not conducive to the Council's wish to provide bike storage and protection that is consistent with local residents need for access to their houses.

Dr Oswald suggested that there are several alternative sites on Dartmouth Park Avenue that would not interfere with access for residents. These include:

  • Location 1 (79a Dartmouth Park Avenue - towards end of the avenue)
  • Location 2 (79A Dartmouth Park Avenue - to the garages of number 70)
  • Location 3 (60-70 Dartmouth Park Avenue)
  • Location 4 (28-42 Dartmouth Park Avenue - Left side of steps)
  • Location 5 (28-42 Dartmouth Park Avenue - Right side of steps)
  • Location 6 (33b-35 Dartmouth Park Avenue)

He submitted photographs of these alternative locations to the council, which are available in the Bike Hangar Deputation.

The Bike Hangar Deputation Submission Form notes that most bike hangars in Camden are not sited directly in front of houses to avoid restricting access, particularly for the elderly and disabled. Instead, they are typically placed along walls or fences where possible. The form states, In Dartmouth Park Avenue there are several such sites, amounting to some 25 metres of walls/fences which would not interfere with access for residents to the front of their houses for unloading purposes.

It is not yet known what decision the Transport Committee will make in light of this evidence.
