Lewisham's A205 Road Realignment project in Catford is facing a significant funding shortfall after Transport for London (TfL) was informed that the scheme would no longer be considered as part of the Department for Transport's (DfT) Major Road Network (MRN) process.
The A205 Road Realignment scheme, which secured planning approval from Lewisham's Strategic Planning Committee in September 2025, aims to transform Catford into a more pedestrian and cycle-friendly environment. The plans include segregated cycle facilities, wider pavements, improved crossings, and enhanced public spaces. The goal is to reduce exposure to emissions and improve road safety for all users.
The project is central to the spatial framework envisaged for Catford's regeneration1. This framework includes the realignment of the road itself, which is considered crucial for other redevelopment projects in the town centre.
It has been revealed that while the scheme had received planning approval, TfL's inability to access funding from the DfT's Major Road Network programme has created a substantial financial gap. Council officers are now working with TfL to explore alternative funding opportunities to keep the project alive.
Patrick Dubeck, a council officer, acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the project's future: The funding outlook for delivery of that scheme is still uncertain. And we know that that road and the realignment of it has a big bearing on the spatial framework that's envisaged for Catford and what comes forward around it. So that remains, unfortunately, still carries a degree of uncertainty, which we all hoped would be clearer by now. And that does, to some degree, have a bearing on the pace and the trajectory of some of the other physical redevelopment of the Town Centre.
Should alternative funding not be secured, the Catford Town Centre Framework may require review2.
Despite the funding setback, the council is exploring options to potentially implement elements of the scheme in isolation. The project team will complete the concept design for the main works and detailed design for the new entrance on Jubilee Fields before pausing to reassess funding prospects.
