Croydon Council is exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance its 'Love Clean Streets' app, potentially improving the efficiency of the service, according to recommendations from the Scrutiny & Overview Committee. The committee met on Tuesday 18 November 2025, and considered how technology could improve the reporting and management of waste events in the borough.
The recommendation came as part of a broader discussion on waste and street cleansing, following a Waste and Street Cleansing Contract Mobilisation Update.
The 'Love Clean Streets' app allows residents to report issues such as fly-tipping and litter. The Scrutiny Recommendations report mentions the Streets & Environment Sub-Committee's recommendation to explore AI implementation in the app to:
- Determine waste event types
- Differentiate between public and private land through geographic intelligence.
This is expected to improve service delivery through better waste event classification and land identification.
The potential use of AI in the 'Love Clean Streets' app reflects Croydon Council's broader Future Croydon Transformation Programme, which aims to:
- Deploy high-impact digital products, such as AI-enabled case management, including those focused on homelessness, and a unified front door for resident services.
- Redesign organisational structures.
- Strengthen commercial capabilities.
- Empower the Voluntary, Community, Faith Sector.
- Embed a culture of continuous improvement.
The Future Croydon Transformation Plan - Nov 25 Scrutiny Update stated that the programme is progressing across all 12 projects, including: Digital Foundations, Unified Front Door, Payments, Simpler Organisation, Workforce Culture & Performance, Shared Services, Demand Management, Community Partnerships, Helping Families Thrive, Adults Living Independently, Commercial Excellence, and Oracle Improvement.
