Croydon Council is exploring the possibility of launching a recognition or accreditation scheme for landlords who adhere to regulations, drawing inspiration from a similar program in Barking and Dagenham. The proposed scheme aims to incentivise good practice and improve housing quality in the borough.

The Homes Sub-Committee initially put forward the recommendation for a landlord accreditation scheme, referencing the compliance awards in Barking and Dagenham as a model, as detailed in the Homes 29-09-25 Recommendations.

The Scrutiny & Overview Committee discussed the proposal at its meeting on 18 November 2025, as part of a review of recommendations from the Homes Sub-Committee. The committee is scheduled to approve the submission of these recommendations, including the one regarding the landlord accreditation scheme, to the Executive Mayor and Cabinet for consideration at their next available meeting, according to the Scrutiny Recommendations.

The Scrutiny Recommendations report detailed other recommendations reviewed by the Scrutiny & Overview Committee, including measures to improve Universal Credit payment collections, address complaints within the Homes Directorate, tackle anti-social behaviour, and develop a resilience plan to address sickness absences among staff.

The specific recommendation regarding the landlord scheme stated that the council should:

consideration be given to introducing a recognition or accreditation scheme for compliant landlords, similar to Barking and Dagenham's landlord compliance awards.

Attending the Scrutiny & Overview Committee meeting were Councillor Leila Ben-Hassel, Councillor Alasdair Stewart, Councillor Ellily Ponnuthurai, Councillor Mario Creatura, Councillor Mark Johnson, and Councillor Eunice O'Dame, along with Simon Trevaskis, Councillor Sue Bennett, and Councillor Brigitte Graham.
