Kingston Council is preparing to assess the feasibility of installing additional cycle parking on its housing estates, as part of its ongoing efforts to promote sustainable transport. The move comes as the council prepares to submit bids to Transport for London (TfL) for funding through the Local Implementation Plan (LIP). The draft LIP Programme was submitted by 31 October 2025, and work on the programme of proposed schemes will commence in April 2026.
The council's assessment will focus on identifying areas within its housing estates where additional cycle parking would be most beneficial. This information will then be shared with ward councillors before a formal bid is submitted to TfL.
The New and Old Malden Neighbourhood Committee has suggested that secure cycle parking on New Malden High Street and Coombe Road be considered to reduce bike theft, as part of scheme item 20 Cycle Parking Programme
. The types of cycle parking solutions being considered include bike shelters, racks and secure storage.
The initiative is part of a wider push to encourage cycling in Kingston. This includes:
- Construction of the Ewell Road cycle scheme.
- Construction of the Kingston to New Malden cycle scheme.
- Continuation of the Jubilee Way cycle route scheme.
- Richmond Road Cycleway Corridor Study.
- SoB cycling review.
The Cycle Parking Programme is included as item 20 in Annex 1 of the Public Reports Pack, but the specific funding amount is marked as 'TBC' (To Be Confirmed).
