Barnet Council has announced plans to install a new 3x3 basketball court at West Hendon Playing Fields as part of a phased improvement project.
The project, approved by the Cabinet in July 2025, will focus on upgrading existing facilities at the playing fields, while also addressing potential environmental impacts. The Welsh Harp is a designated 'Site of Special Scientific Interest ('SSSI')'. As outlined in the Welsh Harp Management Plan Update - Brent, the local planning authority will need to ensure compliance with all relevant notification requirements and applies any applicable national and borough level planning policies relating to SSSIs, taking reasonable steps to further the conservation and enhancement of the relevant flora, fauna, or geological or physiographical features.
According to the Welsh Harp Management Plan Update - Barnet, refurbishment of the existing tennis courts is expected to begin by spring 2026, weather permitting. The subsequent phase of the West Hendon Playing Fields project aims to create a Sports Hub, within current budget limitations. A feasibility study for a 3G pitch has been completed in collaboration with the Football Foundation, marking the first step towards a planning application and a subsequent funding bid.
The West Hendon Playing Fields project is part of a larger effort to improve the Welsh Harp area. Barnet Council continues to work with Brent Council, the Canal and River Trust, The GLA, The London Wildlife Trust and Thames 21 in delivering the overarching Vision for the Welsh Harp, Welsh Harp Management Plan and Brent Catchment Partnership & Action Plan.
