Brent Council is considering new measures that could lead to the suspension of councillors found to have breached the code of conduct. The Audit and Standards Advisory Committee discussed the government's response to a consultation on strengthening the standards and conduct framework for local authorities at a meeting on 3 December 2025.
The proposed changes would grant the council the power to suspend councillors for a maximum of six months for serious breaches of the code of conduct. The council would also have the option to withhold allowances during the suspension for the most serious breaches, and introduce premises and facilities bans either in addition to or as standalone sanctions.
According to the agenda, the most significant changes would grant the council the power to disqualify councillors who have been suspended twice. The Standards Report presented to the committee noted that until further detail and legislation are passed by the government, there is no further action to be undertaken by the council.
The next meeting of the Audit and Standards Advisory Committee is scheduled for Tuesday 3 February 2026.
