An Islington resident has raised concerns about the council's partnership with TotalEnergies for providing on-street electric vehicle (EV) charging, questioning the sustainability of the arrangement. The issue was brought up during a Council meeting held on 4 December 2025, where members of the public and councillors posed questions to the executive.
Jonathan Ward, a member of the public, directly challenged Councillor Rowena Champion, Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality & Transport, about the partnership. Ward argued that TotalEnergies' electricity supply was not genuinely renewable, relying on worthless bits of paper
called Regos, and highlighted the company's status as the biggest fossil fuel producer in Africa, accused of human rights abuses and exploitation.
Councillor Champion acknowledged the convoluted background
of the agreement and committed to reviewing the points raised by Ward. She also invited Ward to provide further details on the certification methods used by TotalEnergies.
