Croydon councillors have voted to increase their member allowances, aligning them with the Local Government Staff Settlement increase. The decision, which the council says will leave a £4,000 surplus in the budget, was made at a full council meeting on Wednesday, 10 December 2025, following a recommendation from the General Purposes Committee.

The council approved an uplift of 3.2% in Members Allowances and agreed to the amended Members' Allowances Scheme for 2025/26, in line with the Local Government Staff Settlement increase. Details of the specific amounts for the Basic Allowance and Special Responsibility Allowances after the 3.2% increase can be found in the amended scheme.

Councillor Sean Fitzsimons, Chair of the General Purposes Committee, presented the report, moving recommendations 2.1 to 2.5 and seeking full council support.

The decision comes after the Independent Panel on the Remuneration of Councillors in London published its report in January 2024, recommending that all allowances be updated annually in line with the percentage pay award agreed by the National Joint Council for Local Government Services Staff.

The council's Members' Allowances Scheme provides for the payment of Basic and Special Responsibility Allowances, Dependent Carers, Travel and Subsistence Allowances and an allowance for the Independent Chair of the Audit and Governance Committee.
