Sutton Council has extended its food and green waste contracts, ensuring continuity of service and supporting the borough's environmental goals. The decision, discussed at the Environment and Sustainable Transport Committee meeting on Thursday 26 June 2025, aims to minimise waste and promote a circular economy, aligning with the council's Environment Strategy and Climate Emergency Response Plan.
The contracts, awarded by the Royal Borough of Kingston as lead commissioners on behalf of the South London Waste Partnership (SLWP), cover the handling, haulage, and treatment of food and green garden waste. The extensions involve Bio Collectors Ltd for direct food waste treatment and Suez Recycling and Recovery Ltd for handling both food and green waste.
The move ensures compliance with upcoming Simpler Recycling legislation and the government's target to eliminate food waste to landfill by 2030. An Appendix A - Climate Impact Assessment Food and Green Waste Treatment Contract Extension was completed.
At the same meeting, the committee also discussed the e-bike provision in the borough. Councillor Christopher Woolmer, Chair of the Environment and Sustainable Transport Committee, and other committee members reviewed the Forest E-bike Scheme and delegated authority to the Strategic Director of Environment Housing and Neighbourhoods to appoint a dockless E-bike service provider for the borough, following a competitive tender process carried out jointly with the London Borough of Kingston. The E-bike review and procurement Cttee Report noted that in May 2025, 3,753 customers completed 23,853 rides, representing a carbon saving of 3.3 tons for the month alone.
