Wandsworth Council's Conservation and Heritage Advisory Committee has unanimously objected to proposed alterations at Chivalry Hall, citing concerns over the impact on the building's historical character.
The committee raised significant objections to two separate applications for the property at 29A-29B Chivalry Road, as detailed in the Public reports pack 08th-Jan-2026 19.00 Conservation and Heritage Advisory Committee.
The primary concerns revolved around proposed changes to the fenestration, including replacement windows and doors, the addition of rooflights and solar panels, and the installation of an air source heat pump.
In their assessment of application 2025/2348, the committee expressed worries that the proposed balconies would be excessively large and visible from the street, questioning their necessity given that both proposed dwellings would have garden access. They also raised strong reservations about the inclusion of glazing bars and the alteration of window sizes, stating that these changes would diminish the understanding of the hall's original use. Specifically, the proposal included shortening two window openings to make them the same size. The objection was grounded in the unacceptable changes to the fenestration on the Chivalry Row frontage, the removal of lancet windows on the side elevation, and the proposed alterations to window sizes and the addition of glazing bars, which would reduce the understanding of the hall's original use.
Application 2025/3241, which was predominantly similar to the first, also faced unanimous objection. The committee resolved to issue the same comments as for the previous application, as their core objections remained unresolved. These included concerns about the fenestration of the garden-facing wall and strong reservations to the depth of the proposed balconies
for application 2025/3241.
During the meeting, it was noted that no pre-application advice had been sought for the first application. The committee also highlighted that the proposed changes to the fenestration, particularly on the Chivalry Row frontage, were unacceptable and would reduce the understanding of the hall's original use.
