Wandsworth's Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) is exploring the possibility of launching public faith walks, a concept inspired by the successful Walks in Faith
initiative in Merton. These walks are designed to promote interfaith understanding and strengthen community cohesion within Wandsworth.
The proposed walks, which would likely be held on Saturdays, are modelled on the Merton experience, which has seen approximately 75 attendees over a 5-mile route. A small charge of £5 per participant is being considered, with the proceeds earmarked for a local homeless charity, mirroring Merton's approach where funds supported the Merton homeless charity (Faith in Action). While the exact revenue is not specified, the Merton walks provided lunch and refreshments at various venues.
Discussions have identified potential routes that could utilise existing paths from primary school faith trails in areas such as Wimbledon, Southfields, and Tooting. Specific places of worship being considered for inclusion in the Wandsworth walks include the Friends Meeting House, Southfields Gurdwara, El Fazl Mosque, St Paul's Church, Wimbledon Synagogue, and the Buddhapadipa Temple. An alternative route could commence at the Khalsa Centre in Tooting, with visits planned to St Anselm's RC Church, Balham Seventh-day Adventist Church, St Mary and John the Divine CE Church, Balham Mandir, Balham Mosque, and Balham Baptist Church.
The Merton Walks in Faith
typically involve a 15-minute talk followed by a 15-minute tour at each location. These events were advertised through cards displayed in libraries and local places of worship, with participants registering at the first venue. Safety measures, including the involvement of police and marshals, were also a key feature of the Merton initiative and are being considered for Wandsworth.
Organising and promoting these events would involve Wandsworth's PR and communications team, Brightside. The SACRE's considerations for these public faith walks are detailed in the document Public Faith Walk Considerations.
