Barnet Council is set to explore the possibility of introducing a Council Tax exemption or discount for residents who are terminally ill and facing financial hardship.
The motion, proposed by Councillor Caroline Stock, was passed at a Council meeting on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. It highlights research indicating a rise in the number of people dying in poverty, disproportionately affecting working-age individuals, women, and minority ethnic groups.
The motion noted that a terminal illness often leads to reduced household income and increased costs, and that no one should spend their final months in financial distress.
It also referenced Manchester City Council's existing Council Tax discount for households with a terminally ill resident as a replicable model.
