Newham's Cabinet has given its backing to the West Ham Park People Friendly Streets scheme, a move that aims to enhance pedestrian and cycle safety in the area surrounding West Ham Park.

The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, February 5, 2026, where councillors considered a call-in from the Overview and Scrutiny Committee regarding the scheme. The Cabinet resolved to proceed with the initiative.

The People Friendly Streets scheme is designed to introduce traffic calming measures and create a safer, more pleasant environment for residents by reducing traffic volume and speed. This initiative is part of the council's wider strategy to encourage active travel and improve air quality, aligning with its commitment to addressing the climate emergency.

The Overview and Scrutiny Committee had previously met on January 20, 2026, and resolved to call in the original officer decision. The Cabinet's decision to move forward with the scheme followed a review of the Officer Key Decision Report, the Overview and Scrutiny Committee's resolution, and a previous Cabinet meeting report from December 3, 2024.

Supporting documents for the scheme include a Scheme Masterplan, General Arrangement drawings, an Engagement Report, and an Equality Impact Assessment (EQIA). The Scheme Masterplan provides a detailed overview of the proposed layout and design, while the EQIA assesses the potential impact on different groups to ensure the council meets its public sector equality duty.
