Barnet Council has extended its agreement for mortuary services with Brent and Harrow councils, ensuring the continuation of these services at Northwick Park Hospital until 2041.

The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, where councillors approved a new inter-authority agreement. This extension builds upon the existing arrangement, which has been in place since 2015. The agreement is specifically with Brent and Harrow, with no other councils mentioned as part of this broader shared service.

The Cabinet noted that establishing a new, independent mortuary service would incur significant capital costs and considerable time. Therefore, continuing the shared service was deemed the most sensible and cost-effective option, offering value for money and maintaining the quality of service. The key benefit of the shared service is its cost-effectiveness, avoiding the substantial financial outlay and time commitment required to set up an independent facility.

The new agreement includes a break clause after 10 years and a 99-year lease for the adjoining site. This decision aims to provide a stable and efficient provision of mortuary services for the boroughs involved.
