Southwark Council has approved a 4.99% increase in council tax for the upcoming financial year, a decision made during a Council Assembly meeting on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
The approved budget for 2026-27 includes an additional £2.6 million in funding allocated to increase the budget for temporary accommodation. This comes as the council faces a cumulative medium-term financial strategy gap of £80.94 million.
The council tax hike comprises a 2.99% increase for the council's own services and a 2.00% increase for the adult social care precept. This will result in a Band D council tax of £1,456.75 for Southwark residents.
Following debate, the substantive motion was carried with 43 votes in favour, 0 against, and 14 abstentions. The council tax setting committee was established to formalise the council tax for 2026-27, with its role, functions, matters reserved, and political composition agreed.
