Croydon residents will face an average council tax increase of £119.43 for the 2026-27 financial year, following a decision by the Council Tax Setting Committee. The rise comprises a 4.99% increase in the Croydon element of the tax, equating to £99.30 for a Band D property, and a 4.10% rise in the Greater London Authority (GLA) precept, adding a further £20.13.
The committee formally set the council tax levels on Thursday, 26 February 2026. The Croydon portion of the tax will now be £2,089.40 for a Band D property, which includes a 2.00% levy specifically for Adult Social Care. The GLA precept will stand at £510.51 for a Band D property.
This brings the total council tax for a Band D property in Croydon to £2,599.91. The decision was made after Full Council agreed the 2026-27 budget on 25 February 2026 and the GLA precept was confirmed on the same day as the committee meeting.
The report presented to the committee, available in the Public reports pack, outlined the council's obligation to set a balanced budget and council tax annually, as mandated by the Local Government Finance Act 1992. The proposed increase aligns with Executive Mayor Jason Perry's business plan, which aims to balance the council's finances and ensure the delivery of sustainable services.
For households with property bands other than Band D, the projected total Council Tax for 2026-27 varies. For instance, a Band A property will incur a total Council Tax of £1,733.27, while a Band H property will face a total of £5,199.82. Further details on the calculation of council tax requirements and bands for 2026-27 can be found in Appendix 1.
The meeting also saw the election of Mayor Jason Perry as Chair and Councillor Stuart King as Vice-Chair for the committee. Apologies for absence were received from Alistair Banning and Stephen Lawrence. The Agenda frontsheet provides further information on the meeting's proceedings.
