Haringey Council's Cabinet has approved a significant £230 million contract for recycling and waste collection, street cleansing, and ancillary services. The decision, made during a meeting on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, will see a new eight-year contract awarded to Bidder B, the preferred bidder.
The contract, valued at £230,358,134, is set to commence on April 17, 2027, with an option to extend for a further eight years. This decision follows a competitive tender process and is subject to a 30-day consultation period with leaseholders and a subsequent 10-day standstill period.
The award of this contract ensures the Council can continue to fulfil its statutory duty to collect waste and recycling and maintain the cleanliness of public spaces. Bidder B's tender was deemed the most economically advantageous, with the company committing to exceeding the Council's minimum service requirements.
Key benefits highlighted from the new contract include reduced vehicle emissions, enhanced contract management, increased recycling initiatives, and the implementation of innovative IT solutions such as on-board weighing. The new service model will also align with the Environment Act and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations. Specifically, Bidder B will be responsible for the introduction of 180-litre wheeled containers for non-recyclable waste and the expansion of food-waste collections to all residents.

During the Cabinet meeting, Councillor Peray Ahmet, Leader of the Council, and Councillor Dana Carlin, Cabinet Member for Finance and Corporate Services, were among those present. The decision to award the contract was made after careful consideration of various options, with the alternative of 'doing nothing' and allowing the current contract to expire being rejected due to the Council's statutory obligations. Other options, such as extending current arrangements or in-sourcing services, had been previously discounted.
